Piracetam: Powder, Capsules, and the Overactive Mind

Post Image

If there is one thing the human population strives for, it is to be better. People are always working toward improving themselves both physically and mentally. Cognitive advancement can; however, be challenging. Some people have a limit in terms of how far they can push themselves mentally. Whether it be at work, in school, or on the day-to-day grind, individuals can fall short of their goals. What if I told you there is a safe drug that is rapidly gaining popularity in helping to boost mental capacity? Nootropic drugs, specifically Piracetam, is a synthetic drug that enhances cognitive abilities.

Although Nootropic drugs are trending, there is little information regarding how effective they truly are. Piracetam side effects are, for the most part, beneficial to the individual. However, there are dangers when taking Piracetam in conjunction with other drugs as well as negative side-effects occurring from its use.

What is Piracetam and What Are the Effects?

Piracetam was created in the 1960s by a Romanian scientist named Dr. Corneliu E. Giurgea. His purpose for creating the drug was to aid in memory improvement. Although he did succeed at creating a drug to improve memory, Piracetam was found to also have a number of other beneficial factors.

Piracetam is a synthetic drug known to:

  • Improve memory
  • Increase energy
  • Increase focus
  • Enhance cognitive ability
  • Increase productivity
  • Increase attention span

Piracetam is one of the most researched cognitive enhancers. Despite the safety of the drug, it has not been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as a dietary supplement. This can be due to the lack of studies conducted on the drug, not because of dangers. It is extremely safe for human consumption. The reason it has not been approved by the FDA is that the properties found in it do not naturally occur and it is not crucial to sustaining life, despite the number of benefits it has on individuals.

Nootropic Drugs

Piracetam is a Nootropic drug. Nootropics are a class of cognitive enhancing supplements. Piracetam and other Nootropic drugs are typically referred to as “smart drugs” because of their ability to increase intelligence, mental capacity, and motivation. Nootropics do not instantly make you more intelligent but they will increase brain function over time. Racetam is the category of Nootropic drugs where Piracetam, as well as several other drugs producing similar effects, fall into.

Racetams consist of :

  • Aniracetam
  • Pramiracetam
  • Oxiracetam

All Racetams stimulate the Acetylcholine receptors in the brain. Acetylcholine is responsible for many brain-related functions and is also responsible for functions in relation to learning, concentration, and reasoning.

Benefits of Piracetam

The benefits of Piracetam outweigh the dangers and health risks. Piracetam is nontoxic. The toxicity of Piracetam is less than that of caffeineand even table salt. It is known to enhance an individual’s cognitive abilities with minimal side-effects. The risks associated with other smart drugs can lead to dependence and negative health risks much worse than those of Piracetam.

The tests done on Piracetam declare it the least harmful smart drug. Their purpose is to improve cognitive function and prevent damage to brain cells, what is not beneficial about that? This drug attracts healthy individuals that simply want to improve their brain, and for the most part, it works. An individual will reap the benefits listed above with little to no side-effects when he or she takes this drug.

Piracetam is not only beneficial for cognitive enhancement, it can also be helpful for patients that suffer from Alzheimer’s. A study done on rats shows that it helps the brain repair itself from alcoholism. It helps to decrease the extent of cognitive decline in elders. Piracetam can help with people suffering from depression and other mental illness. The drug also serves benefits for people with epilepsy, hearing impairments, and it even has anti-inflammatory effects.

No matter how beneficial, there are a few risk factors that come into play with the use of this drug.

What is the Dosage?

The dosage of Piracetam should be between 1,200 – 4,800 mg a day. Due to its very low toxicity, this high of a milligram is not dangerous. An individual using this drug will most likely take it up to three times a day totaling the maximum effective amount of the drug. This drug is considered a starter drug. Meaning an individual who will be participating in the use of Nootropic drugs, specifically in the Racetam class, will most likely start by using Piracetam. It is the most studied of this class and gives very little negative side-effects.

It is also non-addictive so if it doesn’t work for an individual, he or she will not experience withdrawal or difficulties in coming off of the drug.

Piracetam Powder Vs. Capsule

Piracetam typically comes in two forms: in powder and in capsules. Either form of the drug is effective. It is said that it has a bitter taste when consumed in powder form. Because this drug is not approved by the FDA, it is slightly more difficult to find the drug in a capsule. I would say, more people use this drug in powder form.

The effectiveness, for the most part, is the same. The only difference might be the absorption rate and the cost.

When a drug is in powder form, the individual might feel the effects faster than if they took a capsule. Also, the powder form of the drug is likely to be cheaper because it is typically sold in bulk. Capsules are more expensive because it costs money to cap a product. Another reason why capsules might be more expensive or more difficult to find is the FDA’s stance on the drug. Also, it might be a personal choice due to the breakdown process of a capsule. It will take longer for the individual to feel the effects if they ingest a capsule vs. powder.

Dangers of Piracetam

Although the benefits make Piracetam seem like a “miracle drug” there are negative effects that arise from the use of Piracetam. There are very little studies backing up this drug, meaning there is very little evidence of the dangers associated with its consumption. What we do know is that Piracetam use alone can cause anxiety, drowsiness, insomnia, and agitation. It can aid in the progression of a pre-existing addiction. This drug has also been known to cause severe headaches, fatigue, and foggy thinking.

The side effects will vary based on the individual’s reaction to the drug. However, the side effects may not be caused by Piracetam alone. Using the drug in conjunction with other drugs is where the most negative side effects arise.

Although Piracetam does not have addictive properties, it can intensify the effects of drugs or alcohol. This can be dangerous considering the limited studies we have on Piracetam and the effects they might have on an individual consuming other substances.

Piracetam Reactions with Other Substances

Piracetam is known to enhance the effects of alcohol, despite repairing depleted brain functions caused by alcoholism. It can also enhance the effects of other narcotics. Mixing drugs is dangerous, regardless if one alone has no dangerous side effects. Typically, individuals who do this are uneducated on the harmful effects of creating “drug cocktails,” and often suffer the consequences.

Other smart drugs such as Adderall or Ritalin produce the same effects as Piracetam but are essentially more harmful. They can become an issue if any individual combines them with Piracetam. Piracetam does not cause dependence, but Adderall or Ritalin will. This can lead an individual to continue taking all substances over an extensive period of time when its use is mostly intended for a short time period.

Despite this drug being able to help with obstructed brain chemistry in alcoholics, it can actually lead to further damage if taken with alcohol.  Another drug commonly used with Piracetam is MDMA. Taking Piracetam with narcotics can have dangerous effects that are based on the individual’s reaction to the drugs in his or her system.
