Review Guide

Now more than ever, it’s easy to post your opinion about businesses online. Popular sites like Yelp, Facebook, and Google allow you to seamlessly rate and review companies you have patronized. When you review a business online, you perform an important service for that company and its prospective customers.

A fair and objective review can work wonders. It can help customers make informed decisions about companies they are considering. Plus, a business can use information from a review to refine its service or model.

The three aforementioned platforms have star rating systems, which are used to capture the quality of your experience at a glance. This information is every bit as important as the review you post.   

Let us show you how easy it is to review a business:


To write a Yelp review, go to Once you are at the home page, you will see a “Sign Up” button located in the upper right corner. Click on this button to create your Yelp account.

After you click the “Sign Up” button, you will arrive at a form where you can enter your name, email address, password, etc. Once you input this information, click the “Sign Up” button to proceed.  

Next, you will receive an email in the inbox of the account you used to sign up. To confirm your account, open the email and click the “Confirm Email” button.

Now you are ready to write reviews! To do your first review, navigate to the top of the page, underneath the Yelp search bar. You will see a tab that reads “Write Review.” Click it to go to the next page where you can search the business you want to review.

Once you arrive at the next page and input the business, the company’s name should pop up.  Click on the company name to write your review.

Before you click the “Post Review” button, be sure to select the number of stars you wish to assign to the business. Please note that Yelp has a scale of one to five stars with one being the least satisfactory rating and five being the most satisfactory.

In the address page on your internet browser, type If you do not have a Facebook account, you will have to create one to review a business. Creating a Facebook account is easy. To start, add your required information to this landing page.

Once you enter your information, you will receive an email from Facebook that contains a confirmation code.

Copy the code into the space of the Facebook page and hit “continue.” This will activate your account.

Once your Facebook account is activated, you will be sent to your account’s home page. There will be a search bar in the middle of the page. Type the business you wish to review in the search bar and hit “Enter.”

Your search should return a listing of the business you wish to review.

Select the listing to go to the company’s Facebook page. Once you arrive there, you will see a panel with this question: “Do you recommend *the name of the business*?”

When you click “Yes,” a small pop-up box will appear where you can type up your review. The box should look like this:

Once you have completed your review, click “Post” in the bottom right corner and boom! Your first Facebook review is submitted and released into the world.  

Google Reviews

To submit a Google review, go to Input the business you wish to review in the search bar. When you type in the company name, hit the “Google Search” button.  

The search engine will return a list of results with your company appearing in a panel on the right side of the page (It is important to type in the correct name of the business, otherwise it may not turn up in your search results).

Next, select the “Write Review” button located at the bottom of the panel.

If you do not have a Google account, you will be asked to create one after you select the “Write a review” button.  

To continue, select “Create Account.” Once you choose this option, select “For Myself.”

From there, input your information and create a unique username and click “Next.”

Once you complete those steps, you will receive a confirmation email in the account you entered. Once you open the email and confirm your account, you will be returned to the first screen. From there, select “Write a review.”

A pop-up screen labeled “Rate and review” will appear.

You can input your review and select the number of stars you wish to give the business. Google’s star system is similar to Yelp’s with one being the least satisfactory rating and five being the most satisfactory.

Once you enter your review, click “Post.”

Important: When you post reviews for these and other platforms, it is best that you remain honest and constructive about your experience. The reviews you post should remain objective. Do include these details about your experience: customer service, company environment, and your overall impression. You can also update your review as needed.

Also, be mindful that when you post reviews on popular internet sites, what you write is viewable and searchable to the general public. This means that family, friends, and professional acquaintances may be able to see what you write, particularly if any of them have accounts with those sites.

For this reason, it is never appropriate to use obscene language or issue personal attacks in your reviews. Such content reflects negatively upon you and can have far-reaching consequences down the road.  

You will also want to leave out web links and any personal information like names or addresses.

Following these practices not only lead to accurate reviews, but they can also provide businesses and customers the vital information they need to make informed decisions.
