Research into luxury rehab is scarce, but there are many reasons to believe that luxury services may aid the recovery process for some people.
High-end centers offer a variety of amenities and comfortable surroundings that encourage people to stay in treatment. A longer time in treatment is correlated with greater success in recovery.
The core treatment services of medical detox and addiction therapy may not differ substantially between a basic rehab program and a luxury rehab. Luxury facilities may offer a bevy of complementary services, however, and these additional offerings can make them worth the extra cost for some clients.
Substance abuse treatment centers help people overcome addiction and other problems related to drug abuse. These centers come at many price points, the highest of which is represented by what is called luxury rehab centers.
These centers represent the level of care that, given modern science and technology, is essentially the best a person struggling with addiction can hope for. While all evidence-based treatment centers will offer treatment that is based on science, luxury centers provide various services that just aren’t available at standard rehab programs.
This relates most to the degree of comfort they can provide. Luxury rehab centers tend to be, as one might expect, incredibly nice facilities. While they cannot guarantee your recovery process will have zero discomfort, they can do a great deal more to mitigate it than more traditional centers can.
There is one major issue: A stay at these facilities can cost a lot of money. While insurance may cover some of the cost, it’s unlikely to cover the bulk of it at a luxury center.
The core aspects of treatment, such as detox and therapy, may be covered by insurance. Luxury amenities, like massage, gourmet meals, fitness programs, and spa services, are unlikely to be covered.
Forbes did an article in 2012 on a luxury rehab facility which, among many other things, had flat-screen TVs in nearly every room at the facility. It was also equipped with Ralph Lauren furnishings, an expensive luxury furniture brand. This facility was not alone in its luxuries.
Of the things some luxury rehab centers can offer clients, some examples include:
Not all facilities are equal. If you are considering a luxury rehab center, take the time to familiarize yourself with all its offerings. Some centers may even have more luxurious accommodations. These facilities tend to cost even more than standard luxury rehabs, so make sure you are fully aware of all costs prior to enrollment.
Many of these facilities may sound like vacation destinations to the average consumer, some catering to only 12 clients at a time in a huge facility with a library and other quite impressive extravagances, but this assessment is not entirely fair.
Luxury accommodations and amenities do not erase the challenges associated with recovery. Clients in luxury facilities still need to do the work associated with addiction recovery. There is no shortcut; the work takes place in therapy.
Because these facilities tend to cater to an exclusive clientele, there is little research into the exact differences in outcome of people going to these facilities as opposed to traditional ones. Their client bases tend to be very private. The stigmatization of addiction, regardless of how unfair such judgment is, can greatly affect a person’s career, especially if they are famous or rely on investor confidence.
As reporter Charles Passy notes in a piece on rehab centers, self-reported statistics can be misleading. Success rates may only account for those who finish a program, for example, even though many people who are not finding the program helpful likely dropped out before completing the entire thing.
It seems likely these luxury facilities, on average, have a better outcome for clients than if the same client went to a more traditional facility. Staff can be of the highest quality, the client can be kept extremely comfortable, and the facilities are superior overall to traditional centers.
What is clear is that these facilities are not magic bullets. Celebrities still struggle with addiction like anyone else, and these rehabs have programs that last for roughly the same amount of time as more traditional facilities tend to recommend. These programs still take effort to succeed in, even if they come with a great deal of comforts and staff support that other programs don’t have.
It depends on your situation. If you are accustomed to a life of luxury, the amenities, accommodations, and services available at a luxury rehab facility will be more in line with your way of living. This can make it more likely that you will stay in treatment, and a longer duration of time in treatment is important to your success.
Luxury rehab centers are also more likely to offer complementary therapies. While these therapies shouldn’t take the place of traditional therapy, they can add to your recovery process. Some clients make great gains with alternative approaches, such as adventure therapy, wilderness therapy, equine-assisted therapy, and art therapy.
In the end, though, you should not destroy your livelihood to pay for luxury treatment. Stick to traditional care if you cannot really afford luxury care. Traditional rehab can be just as effective as the care you receive in a luxury rehab.
Check with your insurance provider first and a consultant at the treatment center in question to determine exactly how much you will be expected to pay out of pocket. Getting an exact number will help you determine which type of rehab is best for you.
